Drone honey bees are male. They do not have a stinger and really don’t work in the colony at all. Their sole purpose is to be available in case a new queen is raised and needs to mate. In this case about a dozen of these drone bees will fly into the sky with a new queen and mate with her. After the mating process the drone will fall to his death. If a drone does not mate with a queen in his life he is kicked out of the hive when the season changes and the weather cools.
